Stephen Kavanagh, born 1986, Kirkcaldy, Scotland

"My work explores the ways in which absence, presence, destruction and preservation can affect the built environment environment. My studio practice consists of a mixture of 3-dimensional and 2-Dimensional formats, embracing architecture as the main influence I seek out locations within the built environment that hold fractured histories and memories. Once these locations are found I examine the history and events that surround the area and held within the structures. Constructing and borrowing forms from existing architecture, I then translates them into objects with a very human presence. Using sculpture to depict my interest in the structures the materials used reflect its past or present use. Materials such as resin, steel and concrete have all been used in response to the requirements of the piece. "
