NARRATOR

She is too low now for even the dogs to bite. Four steps forward, a damp thick air fills her lungs and blurs her sight. Down she goes, through this narrow walkway – head stooped low, watching as her feet carry her. A corner, another turn, to the left this time. Shadows play on the wall ahead, the outlines are unfamiliar; flickering with movement they are long and sharp against the rough cold stone – a different kinda girl perhaps.

No Heroics Please

- an exhibition exploring narrative in visual art

2013

"No Heroics, Please brings together the work of four artists in a bold and contemporary show that is currently traveling the UK. Anneli Holmstrom, Jessie Makinson, Emma Pratt and Kadie Salmon produce varied and often contrasting works of art, but they are united by their interest in narrative and story-telling, and how these qualities or references are manifested in visual art. If a picture tells a thousand words then an exhibition has the potential to be something of an essay; however in creating an environment of pictures, imagery and visual provocation, context and sequence become crucial to interpretation and understanding. To think of art as language and to allow form and colour to tell a story is a beginning, but even if a single image can be quantified as just a thousand words, then the translation of each word allows for variation and exponential mutation of the artist's story in their uptake, keeping the ending fluid in a way that a final page, falling curtain or rolling credit cannot be."- Richard Spencer 2013
